If you love taking care of your wool garments, a felt needle book is a simple and fun way to keep your mending needles organized and ready to use. This easy DIY project is perfect for all skill levels and uses natural materials, making it a great addition to any wool lover’s toolkit.
Wool clothing is made to last, and a little mending can go a long way in keeping your favourite pieces in great shape. Having a neat and handy spot for your sewing and darning needles makes repairs easier and more enjoyable. A felt needle book keeps everything secure, prevents lost needles, and is small enough to take anywhere. Plus, felt is naturally soft yet sturdy, so it holds your needles safely without dulling them.
What You’ll Need:
- Felt sheets
- Embroidery thread or strong cotton thread
- Scissors
- Sewing needle
- Pins or clips
- Button or ribbon (optional for closure)
- Decorative elements (embroidery, felt scraps)
Step By Step Instructions
1. Cut Your Felt Pieces
- Cut one long rectangle, for the front and back cover, about 3 x 10 inches (or whatever size feels right to you!)
- Cut a few smaller rectangles for the inside pages so they fit neatly inside the cover
2. Add a Personal Touch
- Get creative! Add some embroidery or a simple patch to the cover for some colour or use a blanket stitch around the outside.
- Want to make it extra special? Stitch your name or initials onto it!
3. Put It Together
- Stack your inner felt pages neatly inside the long rectangular piece and fold to create a book
- Use pins or clips to keep everything aligned while you stitch if you find it helpful
4. Sew the Spine
- Using embroidery thread, sew a simple running stitch along the center fold to hold all the layers together
- Make sure your stitches go through all layers so your pages stay secure
5. Add a Closure (Optional)
- Sew a small button on the front cover and attach a loop of thread or ribbon to the back to keep it closed
- Or, sew a ribbon into the edge so you can tie your book shut when you're not using it
And that’s it! You now have a practical little needle book to keep your mending supplies neat and easy to grab. Whether you're fixing a hole in your favorite sweater or darning a well-loved pair of socks, your felt needle book will make the process even more enjoyable.
