There is something deeply grounding about working with wool—its softness, warmth, and quiet invitation to slow down. This needle-felted star garland is a simple seasonal craft that can be made as a decoration, a heartfelt gift, or a shared holiday activity with older children.
Each star is formed by hand, giving time for creativity and thoughtfulness. Hung across a mantel, window, or nature table, the finished garland brings a soft, handmade presence into your home.
Please note: Felting needles are very sharp. This activity is best suited for adults and older children with close supervision.
Materials Needed
- Cookie cutters or your desired shape (we chose a few different star sizes)
- Fairy wool in the colours of your choice
- Felting needle(s) — a single needle and/or a multi-needle holder
- Foam felting block
- Sewing needle
- Thread
Step-by-Step Instructions
Gather your materials
Prepare a clear workspace with your foam block underneath to protect your surface.
Begin shaping your star
Place wool felt inside the cookie cutter, set on top of the foam block. Gently begin felting inside the shape, allowing the wool to compress and hold together.
Build thickness as you go
As the wool compacts, you may choose to add more felt to create a thicker, sturdier star.
Refine the edges
Once the shape is well felted, carefully remove it from the cookie cutter. Use a single felting needle to refine and soften the edges.
Repeat
Continue making as many stars as you’d like for your garland.
String your garland
Thread your sewing needle and pass it widthwise through each felted star.
Add spacing and details
Decide how far apart you’d like each shape. For a fuller look, you can add beads, buttons, or even popcorn between stars.
Finish for hanging
Leave enough thread on each end of the garland to tie loops for hanging.

Quiet Contemplation
We invite patience, presence, and creativity with this craft—qualities that feel especially meaningful during the winter season. Whether made together or quietly on your own, we hope this star garland brings warmth and gentle light into your home. ⭐️
