In the spring of 2023, as you may remember, we embarked on a journey across Europe to visit all of our manufacturers. Building strong, positive relationships with our partners is important to us. We love learning about their origins, their work environments, and how they collaborate to meet the organic, human, and environmental standards that we value so much.
One of our stops was Pickapooh, located in Hamburg, Germany. It was a wet and grey day, but their bright red building was easy to spot! We were warmly greeted by Krystel and Kerstin, the founder and owner of Pickapooh. We learned right away that the name Pickapooh comes from the childhood game of peek-a-booh! That makes it all the more charming for me!
Kerstin Tollmien started Pickapooh in 1991, and over the years, she has perfected the art of hat-making, specializing in hats for every type of weather. Pickapooh offers a range of hats for summer, spring/fall, and winter, and they release new styles and colors every year. At Warmth and Weather, we adore their hats. Personally, I’ve always struggled to find a hat that fits my larger-than-average head. It’s either too tight or too floppy—definitely not ideal when I’m out working or walking on a windy day. A hat should fit so well that you hardly notice it! And Pickapooh gets that. They create hats in 2cm increments, so once you measure the circumference of your head, you’re sure to find the perfect fit. Whether your head is smaller or larger than average, Pickapooh has you covered. One of my children needed an adult-sized hat by the time they started school, which is completely normal! Their wide range of sizes ensures everyone finds a comfortable fit in a style that suits them perfectly.
Pickapooh not only specializes in hats but also in producing high-quality, ecological, and sustainable hats and accessories for the whole family. Their hats are made with the awareness and care for people, animals, and the environment. They use fine merino wool from happy animals and produce all their products in Germany.
This is a small, family-owned company with a dedicated team, including office support, IT, designers, cutters, sewers, and quality control experts. When things get busy, they bring in a co-production team. Their marketing and photography team also plays a vital role in sharing their wonderful products with the world. Everyone at Pickapooh is committed to their work and to creating something truly special.
We had a fantastic visit with Pickapooh and felt the warmth and enthusiasm of everyone there. Though we only carry a selection of their products, we believe what we offer is perfect for North America. Their hats suit our cool shoulder seasons and cold or chilly, damp winters.
