There are some things we use every day without giving them much thought.
A good pair of socks should probably be one of those things—but once you experience the difference that well-made wool socks can make, it is hard not to notice.
At Warmth and Weather, we have been wearing Hirsch Natur socks for years. They are simple, dependable, and comfortable, keeping our feet warm without making them sweaty or adding unnecessary bulk.
And perhaps most importantly, they are made from the natural material we trust most: organic merino wool.
Wool Makes Wonderful Socks
Our feet work hard. They carry us through the day, spend hours inside shoes and boots, and can easily become either too hot or too cold.
Wool has a remarkable ability to help regulate all of this.
Merino wool absorbs moisture from the skin while helping to maintain a comfortable temperature. It continues to insulate even when damp, making wool socks wonderful for winter walks, outdoor play, hiking, working outside—or simply keeping your feet comfortable around the house.
Unlike synthetic fibres, wool is a natural, breathable fibre.
Your feet can breathe, your temperature can regulate, and your socks can do their job.
Hirsch Natur uses 100% organic merino wool, allowing these natural qualities to shine through.

Made for Everyday Life
We love Hirsch Natur because these aren't socks to save for special occasions. They are made for everyday life.
They go into boots for a walk through the woods, into shoes for school, under winter boots on a cold morning, and onto bare feet around the house. They travel to the cottage, the campground and the garden.
For younger children, Hirsch Natur makes socks with non-slip soles, giving little feet extra grip as they move across floors. There are simple everyday styles, warm winter socks, and a variety of colours and sizes for the whole family.
It is the kind of practicality we appreciate: thoughtful design without anything unnecessary.

Why 100% Merino?
There is something particularly lovely about a sock made entirely from wool.
Merino wool is naturally:
- Warm – insulating without unnecessary bulk.
- Breathable – allowing moisture to move away from the skin.
- Temperature-regulating – helping feet stay comfortable as temperatures change.
- Odour-resistant – naturally resisting the buildup of odours.
- Durable – when cared for properly, good wool socks can last for years.
This is especially helpful for children. Little feet can go from warm to sweaty to chilly surprisingly quickly. Wool helps moderate those changes rather than simply trapping heat.

You Don't Need a Drawer Full of Socks
One of the best pieces of sock wisdom we have ever received is surprisingly simple:
You don't need very many pairs.
A small rotation of good-quality wool socks can take you a long way.
Wear a pair, then let it air out for a couple of days before wearing it again. Wool doesn't need to be washed after every wear, and airing your socks between uses helps preserve the fibres and extend their life.
Less washing, less fuss, and longer-lasting socks.
Of course, we understand the temptation to have a few extra pairs. We love colour and variety too!
But a smaller collection of well-made socks, cared for thoughtfully, can serve you beautifully.

A Little Mending Goes a Long Way
A good wool sock doesn't necessarily need to be discarded when it begins to show some wear.
A small hole can often be darned.
We keep darning thread on hand for this very reason. Wool yarn can also work beautifully, and a little patch can give a well-loved sock many more years of life.
There is something satisfying about repairing something rather than replacing it.
A worn heel or a small hole isn't necessarily the end of the story. Sometimes it is simply an invitation to care for what you already have.

Hirsch Natur: Nearly a Century of Wool
Hirsch Natur is a family-run company based in Laer, Germany, with roots reaching back nearly a century.
The company began in the family inn, where Franz Kloppenborg Sr. installed sock-making machines in the ballroom. From those early beginnings grew a company known for its carefully made natural-fibre socks.
That long history is part of what we appreciate about Hirsch Natur. There is knowledge that comes from making the same essential garment for generations—knowing how wool behaves, how a sock should fit, and how to make something that will be worn and loved for years.
Today, Hirsch Natur continues to focus on natural materials and responsible production, with organic wool at the heart of its collection.

A Simple Thing, Beautifully Made
That's perhaps what we love most about Hirsch Natur socks.
They aren't complicated.
They are simply good socks.
Good wool. Thoughtful construction. Comfortable on your feet. Made for real life.
When the mornings are cool and we are pulling on our boots, when children are heading outside to play, when we are walking through the woods or simply padding around the house, Hirsch Natur socks are often right there with us.
Where we go, our wool goes too.
Sometimes warmth really does begin with something as simple as a good pair of socks.
