Warm Parents, Happy Kids

Warm Parents, Happy Kids

The Mama-Approved Capsule, Part Two: Taking Care of Parents Too

When my children were little, I quickly learned something important: if I was going to keep up with them outside—at child speed—I had to be warm enough too. There’s nothing quite like realizing your toddler is happily digging in the snow while you’re shivering, wondering how much longer you can last.

So, I built my version of the Mama-Approved Capsule for me:

  • Base layers (yes, parents need them too)
  • Wool socks that keep feet toasty in boots or slippers
  • Wool sweaters and coats that cut the wind
  • Scarves, hats, mitts… because the details matter.

Warmth is more than just comfort—it’s human. Without it, we can’t be fully alive, engaged, or even pleasant to be around (I dare you to enjoy a walk in the snow with cold feet!). Warmth gives us energy, interest, and joy. It’s physical warmth, but also soul warmth—the kind that makes you lean in, connect, and care.

Growing up in northern Ontario, on the shores of Lake Superior, and later in Muskoka, I hardly ever remember being cold (well, maybe on the back of a snowmobile on an evening ride). My father, a park superintendent, spent his days outside—clearing trails, fixing trucks, making ice rinks, and talking to campers. I thought, that’s the life I want when I grow up. And in many ways, I found it—spending years outside as a kindergarten teacher with children in the fresh air, rain or shine, all year round.

The difference now is that I am older, a Nana! Wool is much more critical. Since I discovered it years ago, I’ve never had to cut short an adventure because I wasn’t warm enough. Wool makes it easy to stay out as long as I want—and enjoy every minute.

Here’s what I’ve learned: taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s part of taking care of your children. When you’re warm, happy, and comfortable, you have more patience, more presence, and more joy to share.

So here’s my encouragement for parents:
Build your own Mama-Approved Capsule. Because when you’re warm, happy, and comfortable, you can say yes to your child’s “just five more minutes” outside… and mean it.

And stay tuned for Part Three of this series—we’ll turn to the finishing touches: the accessories that make all the difference in keeping everyone cozy from head to toe.
