A few years back, we had the opportunity to travel across Europe to visit the manufacturers we work closely with. Building strong, respectful relationships with our partners is central to what we do. We value knowing where our products come from, how they are made, and the people behind them—especially those who share our commitment to organic integrity, human dignity, and environmental care.
One of our stops was Pickapooh, located in Hamburg, Germany. It was a wet and grey day, but their bright red building stood out immediately. We were warmly welcomed by Kerstin, founder and owner of Pickapooh. We also learned that the name Pickapooh comes from the childhood game peek-a-boo—a detail that still makes me smile.
Kerstin Tollmien founded Pickapooh in 1991, and over the years, she has developed a deep expertise in thoughtful, well-fitting headwear. Pickapooh creates hats for every season—summer, shoulder seasons, and winter—and releases new styles and colours each year. At Warmth and Weather, we truly appreciate their work.
On a personal note, I’ve always struggled to find hats that fit my larger-than-average head. Too tight, too floppy, or simply uncomfortable—especially frustrating when I’m outside working or walking on a windy day. A good hat should fit so well that you barely notice it. Pickapooh understands this. Their hats are made in precise 2 cm size increments, making it possible to find a truly comfortable fit once you know your head circumference. One of my children needed an adult-sized hat by the time they started school, which is more common than people realize. Pickapooh’s wide size range makes space for this natural diversity.

All of their products are made in Germany, with close attention to people, process, and place.
Pickapooh remains a small, family-owned company with a dedicated team that includes designers, cutters, sewers, and quality control specialists. During busier seasons, they work with a trusted co-production team. Their marketing and photography collaborators help share their work with the wider world, but at the heart of it all is a shared commitment to craftsmanship and integrity.
Our visit to Pickapooh was filled with warmth and enthusiasm.
