All of my childhood memories of mitts are either of handmade ones from family members or those old 'skidoo mitts'! That gives you an idea of how long ago that was... Growing up, my mother and both grandmothers knit and sewed much of our clothing. I spent countless hours at their feet, playing with the colorful scraps that fell as they worked. It was there that my love for creating things began. They crafted out of necessity, but always with so much love. I still remember the snow sticking to the mitts and the distinct smell of lanolin when they got wet.
As you may know, we sell unlined rain mitts, and I thought, how wonderful would it be to pair them with a handmade mitten inside? So, I dusted off my knitting skills and knit a pair of mitts! I was definitely a bit rusty, and if you look closely, one is slightly bigger than the other—but I did it. Two little hands will soon enjoy them.
When I went searching for a pattern, I found "The World's Simplest Mitts." I reached out to the designers, Alexa and Emily, to ask if I could share the pattern with you all—and they kindly said yes! Thank you, Alexa and Emily. The pattern was super easy to follow, and the mitts turned out great. Find out more about Emily and Alexa here.
For this project, I used our Filges Bioland Organic Knitting Yarn, Knit Picks Double-Sided Knitting Needles from Paper Pipet, and "The World's Simplest Mitts" pattern. It took me about two days to finish (with a few redos here and there). The chunky yarn made things go quicker, too. (A little note: the plant-dyed yarn turned my fingers slightly blue at first—this is common with indigo dye, so make sure to hand wash separately.)
If you're a knitter, give them a try, and don’t forget to share how yours turn out!
