About a year and a half ago, Jared and I had the privilege of visiting the Hirsch Natur manufacturing center in Laer, Germany. It was an unforgettable experience that deepened our appreciation for the socks we wear every day. Sabine Brüggemann, the current owner and granddaughter of the factory’s founder, warmly welcomed us. We were immersed in the rich history of this family-run business, which began nearly a century ago when Franz Kloppenborg Sr. set up sock-making machines in the ballroom of the family inn.
During our visit, we were fascinated by the many machines working in harmony to produce socks. Each one had a specific role, from creating the cuff to shaping the toes or even more magically creating entire socks. One machine, caught our attention—the one responsible for adding the no-slip dots to the bottom of children’s socks. Watching it apply rows of these tiny rubber grips was mesmerizing. This thoughtful detail ensures that little ones can run, climb, and play safely without slipping, making these socks as practical as they are cozy.
We also explored the washing room, where the socks are washed, sized, and dried before being packaged. Witnessing the combination of advanced machinery and the care that the team were taking was awe-inspiring. It’s clear that every step in the process is designed to uphold the highest standards of quality. By the time we left, we had a newfound respect for the magic behind our socks.
Timeless Sock Wisdom
This visit wasn’t my first to Hirsch Natur—I’d been there many years ago and met Sabine’s brother, who was overseeing operations at the time. He shared some timeless advice about socks that I still adhere to. According to him, you don’t need a drawer full of pairs. “Three pairs are perfect,” he said. “Wear one, air it out for two days, and then wear it again. Rotate three pairs, and you’ll have a complete cycle for a week.”
He also gave me a tip about caring for merino wool socks: don’t overwash them. Washing too frequently can wear out the fibers faster. Instead, he recommended washing every three or four wears or so, relying on the natural self-cleaning properties of merino wool. “The magic happens in the airing out,” he said, and he was absolutely right. Of course I love colour and variety in my sock collection so I have a lot more than three but I don't over-wash them!
Extend the Life of Your Socks
Caring for your socks doesn’t stop at washing—they can last even longer with a bit of mending. Catching holes when they’re small and repairing them can extend the life of your favourite pairs significantly. At Warmth and Weather, we offer darning thread to help you fix holes, but you can also use wool yarn, felt, or boiled wool patches for the job. I’ve patched the soles of some of my socks multiple times, and they still feel like new everywhere else! With a little effort, your well-loved socks can keep serving you for years to come.
Hirsch Natur’s 100% organic merino wool socks are the best choice for warmth and keeping your feet warm and dry. Unlike other socks that often include synthetic fibers for added strength, Hirsch Natur socks remain pure, allowing merino wool to do what it does best—wick moisture and regulate temperature. Synthetic content in socks can compromise this process, leading to sweaty feet that trap moisture and make your feet cold. With Hirsch Natur’s pure merino wool socks, your feet stay dry and cozy, no matter the weather. With a little care and occasional mending, these socks can keep serving you for years to come while maintaining their exceptional performance.
