The New Year is a time for reflection and setting intentions for the year ahead, and what better way to celebrate than with a Blessings Jar? This simple, heartfelt project is a wonderful way for the whole family to capture special moments, set intentions, and reflect on the experiences and adventures that make life beautiful. By year’s end, your jar will be filled with memories to relive together on New Year’s Eve. It’s an activity full of gratitude and creativity, perfect for all ages!
What You’ll Need:
- An empty, clear jar (a mason jar, old cookie jar, or any jar you love)
- Tissue paper (we used white for ours)
- White glue
- Paint brush
- Scissors
- Kite paper
- Ribbon (optional)
- Paper or cardstock in various colours
- Markers or pens
How to Make Your Blessings Jar:
- Start by applying a thin layer of white glue using a paint brush to your jar. Cover it with tissue paper to create a smooth, light background. This will give the jar a soft, frosted look that’s perfect for showcasing your designs.
- Cut out fun shapes from kite paper, like stars, hearts, flowers, or whatever inspires you. Use the glue to attach these colourful shapes to the tissue-covered jar.
- Once your decorations are dry, tie a ribbon around the top of the jar for an extra-special finish if you'd like!
- Choose different colours of paper for each family member. These will be used to write blessings, memories, and moments of gratitude throughout the year.
The Blessings Jar is meant to grow with your family over the year. Each time something wonderful happens—a kind word, a new accomplishment, or a day that felt magical—write it down and add it to the jar. You’ll find it’s not only fun to watch the jar fill up but also a lovely reminder of life’s little joys.
Make it a point to revisit your jar periodically. Take a moment during dinner or on a quiet weekend to pull out a blessing or two and reflect on those special times. These little pauses can be a great way to stay connected and mindful as the months go by.
On New Year’s Eve, gather the family around to open the jar and read through the year’s blessings. Laugh, cry, and relive the moments that made your year unforgettable. Then, start anew for the next year with fresh paper, fresh memories, and a fresh jar if you’d like.
This lighthearted project is more than just a fun craft—it’s a way to celebrate the beauty of everyday life. So grab a jar, gather your supplies, and start creating a tradition that your family will cherish for years to come. Here’s to a year filled with blessings and unforgettable moments!
