The Magic of Layers

The Magic of Layers

Start with a little wool. Add as the weather asks.

There is a certain kind of magic in dressing for the changing seasons.

The morning begins with a chill. By lunchtime, the sun is shining, and everyone is wondering why they put on that extra layer. Then, as the afternoon fades, the cool air returns.

What do we do?

We layer.

At Warmth & Weather, we return again and again to this simple idea: when the body is warm, there is freedom. Freedom to run, climb, explore, sit quietly, dig in the garden, walk through the woods, or simply stay outside a little longer.

And layering allows us to respond to the weather as it changes.

We don't have to know exactly what the day will bring. We simply need to have the right layers ready.

Begin with the First Layer

For children, I like to begin simply.

A wool tank or short-sleeved T-shirt, along with Bermuda shorts, is often the perfect place to start.

Some children are naturally warm. They run, jump, climb and explore from morning until night. These children may be happiest with a tank or T-shirt next to the skin, without a long sleeve underneath everything else.

Others are slower-moving creatures. They like to stop and watch the snail crossing the path, sit and read a book, or quietly observe the world around them. They may need a little more warmth.

And this is where the beauty of layering comes in.

Add One Layer at a Time

As the weather cools, pull out the long-sleeved wool shirt.

Now our simple base layer has become:

Tank or T-shirt + long sleeve

When the temperature drops further, we add leggings.

Tank or T-shirt + long sleeve + leggings

And just like that, we have built warmth gradually, without starting the season bundled up in everything at once.

When spring comes, we simply begin taking the layers away again.

One disappears.

Then another.

Until we are back to that first light layer.

You Really Don't Need That Many

One of the things I love about wool base layers is how little you actually need.

For a child's basic base-layer wardrobe, you can go a long way with:

2 tanks or T-shirts
2 long-sleeved shirts
2 pairs of leggings

That's it.

These few pieces can take you from the first cool mornings of fall, through the colder months of winter, and right back into spring.

The secret isn't having more clothing.

It is having the right layers.

And Then There Is the Magic of Wool

Another reason I love wool for children's base layers is that it doesn't need to be washed after every wear.

Wool naturally manages moisture and resists odour, so you can often wear it again and again.

I usually let my wool rest for a day before wearing it again. Hang it up, let it breathe, and give it a little time to recover.

I wash my wool only when it needs it—sometimes about once a month. Spot clean when required.

Less washing means less work, less wear on the clothing, and a longer life for those beautiful natural fibres.

And children? Well, they can get on with the important business of being children.
