A Visit to Hirsch Natur: Where Thoughtful Socks Are Born

A Visit to Hirsch Natur: Where Thoughtful Socks Are Born

A few years ago, Jared and I had the privilege of visiting the Hirsch Natur manufacturing centre in Laer, Germany. It was an unforgettable experience that deepened our appreciation for the socks we wear every day.

We were warmly welcomed by Sabine Brüggemann, the current owner and granddaughter of the factory’s founder. As she guided us through the building, we were immersed in the rich history of this family-run business—one that began nearly a century ago, when Franz Kloppenborg Sr. installed sock-making machines in the ballroom of the family inn. From those humble beginnings, a company now known around the world for its exceptional organic wool socks grew.

Walking through the factory floor, we were fascinated by the many machines working together in perfect rhythm. Each one had a specific task: knitting cuffs, shaping toes, or—most magically—creating entire socks from start to finish. One machine caught our attention in particular: the one that applies the tiny no-slip dots to the bottoms of children’s socks. Watching rows of small rubber grips appear was mesmerizing. This simple, thoughtful detail ensures that little ones can run, climb, and play safely without slipping—proof that practicality and comfort can go hand in hand.

We also explored the washing room, where finished socks are carefully washed, sized, and dried before packaging. Seeing the combination of advanced machinery and the attentive care of the team was truly inspiring. Every step in the process reflects a commitment to quality and longevity. By the time we left, we had a renewed respect for the craftsmanship behind something as everyday—and essential—as a pair of socks.

Timeless Sock Wisdom

This wasn’t my first visit to Hirsch Natur. Many years ago, I had met Sabine’s brother, who was overseeing operations at the time. He shared some simple, practical wisdom about socks that has stayed with me ever since.

“You don’t need a drawer full of pairs,” he told me. “Three pairs are perfect. Wear one, air it out for two days, then wear it again. Rotate three pairs and you have a complete cycle for the week.”

He also gave me invaluable advice about caring for merino wool socks: don’t overwash them. Washing too frequently wears down the fibers faster. Instead, he recommended washing every three or four wears and relying on merino wool's natural self-cleaning properties. “The magic happens in the airing out,” he said—and he was absolutely right.

Of course, I love colour and variety, so I own far more than three pairs! But I’ve taken his words to heart and learned not to over-wash them.

Extend the Life of Your Socks

Caring for your socks doesn’t stop with mindful washing. A little mending can help them last even longer. Catching small holes early and repairing them can add years to your favourite pairs.

At Warmth and Weather, we offer darning thread to make repairs easy, but wool yarn, felt, or small boiled-wool patches work beautifully too. I’ve patched the soles of some of my socks multiple times, and they still feel wonderful everywhere else. With a bit of care, well-loved socks can continue to serve you season after season.

Hirsch Natur socks are made from 100% organic merino wool, without synthetic fibers. This purity allows the wool to do what it does best—wick moisture, regulate temperature, and keep feet warm and dry. Socks blended with synthetics often trap moisture, leading to damp, chilly feet. Pure merino wool lets your skin breathe naturally, keeping you comfortable in all kinds of weather.
