Getting Ready for Fall

Getting Ready for Fall

There is always a moment when we realize that summer is beginning to shift. The mornings feel a little cooler, the evenings arrive a little earlier, and we begin reaching for an extra layer before heading outside.

This morning, I left for the gym and realized I really needed a jacket!

None of us is quite ready to let go of summer, but the earth is moving into its next season. Fall is a time to prepare for cooler days and return to the simple practice of layering.

The Art of Layering

Layering allows us to respond to changing temperatures throughout the day. Rather than dressing for one particular temperature, we can build warmth gradually—a light base layer, a warmer middle layer, and a protective outer layer when needed.

This is especially important for children. They live closer to the earth, spending so much of their days outdoors and moving between indoor and outdoor environments. They also tend to warm up quickly when they are playing. As a general rule, children often need one more layer than we do to stay comfortably warm, especially when they are standing still or spending time outdoors.

And as we age, we often find that we need more layers, too. It can become harder to stay warm, and we begin to feel the chill more deeply. A few thoughtful layers can make all the difference.

The key is to choose layers that work together and can easily be added or removed as the day unfolds.

Why Wool?

Wool is one of nature’s remarkable fibres for helping us stay comfortable through changing temperatures. It breathes, holds warmth close to the body, and helps regulate temperature without feeling heavy.

A good wool base layer provides a gentle foundation for the rest of our clothing. Add another layer as the weather cools, and an outer layer when you head outside.

For us, this is one of the joys of wool: it works with the body rather than simply adding bulk.

Preparing for Fall

While we may want to hold onto summer for as long as we can, there is something lovely about preparing for the season ahead.

Take a look at the woolens your family already has. What still fits? What has been outgrown? What might need replacing? Perhaps it’s time to pull those favourite woolens out of storage and see what will carry you into the cooler months.

And if you’re looking for something new, our Engel Pre-Order is a wonderful opportunity to explore the coming season’s colours and styles—including the new pastel rainbow pieces, sage green 100% merino wool base layers, and the Reborn Hoody.

Summer may not be over quite yet, but fall is on its way. A few good layers can help us meet it with warmth and ease.
